CMU HCII Seminar: Edward Wang

October 13, 2023 - 1:30pm to 2:30pm

CMU Human-Computer Interaction Institute Seminar

Speaker: Edward Wang, PhD, Assistant Professor, UC San Diego

Title: Elevating Access to Remote Health Monitoring Fairly

Description: Many of today’s healthcare solutions do not provide access to the poor and are not racially fair. To address this, my group is leveraging the proliferation of mobile technology, particularly smartphones, as a ready-made sensor infrastructure to bring access to health monitoring to the masses; developing systems that are ultra-low-cost and racially inclusive as the core innovation value. With the ubiquity of digital technologies that is seeping into every fabric of our lives, we are presented with an opportunity to harness the economy of scale that is driving down the cost of distributing a wide array of sensors that can be repurposed and reprogrammed. In this talk, I will share with you late breaking work that my group, the DigiHealth Lab, is doing particularly around leveraging built-in sensors of smartphones for making hypertension screening as accessible as downloading an app, discovering new digital biomarkers for Alzheimer’s screening, and developing cross-cultural maternal digital health tools.
