Title: Progress and future challenges in AI, wearables, and smartphones for understanding and healing depression
Description: The prevalence of depression grew more than threefold during the pandemic, on top of a pre-pandemic increase in growth for people under age 26 starting in the years of smartphone adoption. There is little understanding of what personalized factors cause or precipitate a person’s depression improving or worsening, nor is there a reliable treatment, although most people will get better. Mobile and wearable devices are improving in their ability to collect continuous physiology and model activity/sleep/social/stress and mood data, detecting subtly changing patterns related to changing health, and providing early AI-generated forecasts of health changes. What are some of these patterns telling us about neurological activity, mood, stress and brain health? This talk will highlight some of the latest results from our studies developing AI for mental health at MIT, focusing on both scientific and ethical challenges.
